Phlebology. Phlebologist

Vein health problems are known as the disease of civilisation - over time, changes in working conditions and daily routines, sedentary lifestyles, sedentary work and other factors have contributed to leg vein diseases. The prevention, treatment and research of venous diseases is the medical discipline of phlebology, where a phlebologist is a doctor who diagnoses vascular diseases and develops a treatment plan for venous and lymphatic insufficiency and trophic ulcers. A phlebologist also prevents vascular abnormalities that may cause unpleasant moments for the patient due to their visual appearance. 

In the diagnostic phase, the phlebologist performs examinations using duplex sonography, which is the gold standard for vein examinations.

When should I see a phlebologist?

You should not postpone a visit to the phlebologist if you notice the following symptoms:

  • swelling in the ankles and lower legs;
  • capillary pattern;
  • formation of varicose veins, venous nodules and thick veins;
  • tiredness, heaviness, tingling and pain in the legs (e.g. in the evenings);
  • changes in skin pigmentation, cramps in the lower legs (at night), burning sensation, itching, eczema and non-healing ulcers;
  • long-standing non-healing ulcers between the foot and knee.

It is recommended that everyone has their veins checked by a phlebologist once a year, especially if:

  • vein problems run in families;
  • you work sitting or standing;
  • staying in the heat all the time;
  • overweight.
